About

Dierendonckblancke architecten is based in Ghent and was founded in 2009 by Alexander Dierendonck (° 1971) and Isabelle Blancke (° 1973). The office currently has 17 employees.
The office portfolio includes projects of several scales and programs such as cultural centers (Avelgem, Beselare, Kasterlee, Lubbeek), schools (Riemst, Antwerp), care projects (Gierle, Genk), group homes (Ghent, Antwerp) and private homes (12K, Gelukstraat).

The office first drew public attention with their community center Spikkerelle in Avelgem, which was nominated for the 2009 EU Mies Award. From then on, the work of the office became increasingly known. Among other prizes the office has been nominated several times for the EU Mies Award, Belgian Building Awards and FAB Awards. The work of Dierendonckblancke has been exhibited in several exhibitions in Brussels, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Madrid, London and Sao Paolo. The work of the office was recently exposed in a monographic exhibition, 'Dierendonckblancke, Praxis' at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussel.
Alexander Dierendonck

(°23.03.1971, Nieuwpoort, Belgium) graduated in Architecture at Sint Lucas in Ghent in 1994. He founded Dierendonckblancke architecten together with Isabelle in 2009. Alongside his role within the practice, Alexander was a visiting Professor at the Peter Behrens School of Architecture in Düsseldorf in 2017 and is a jury member for several architecture schools and institutions in Belgium and abroad. He has been a member of leading group “Pilot projects living: New forms of collective living in Flanders” and “Agrarian Architecture” for the Flemish Government. Prior to starting the practice, Alexander worked for several offices in Paris including Agence Dominique Perrault and Agence Manuelle Gautrand.

Isabelle Blancke

(°01.07.1973, Veurne, Belgium) graduated in Architecture at Sint Lucas in Ghent in 1996. She founded Dierendonckblancke architecten together with Alexander in 2009. Alongside the office, Isabelle has been invited to sit on a number of awards and competition juries and is a jury member for several architecture schools and institutions in Belgium. Isabelle was also member of the editorial board of the ‘Architectuurboek Vlaanderen n ° 14’ in 2019. Prior to starting Dierendonckblancke Architecten, Isabelle worked for several offices in Paris and in Belgium, such as Agence Dominque Perrault, Agence Patrice Mottini and TV Stéphane Beel – Xaveer De Geyter.

ILVO research landscape, competition, first prizeTogether with Hans Lust and Lieve Van De Ginste we started daughter company DBLV architecten in 2020. Following a call organized by the Vlaams bouwmeester and together with fallow architecture and DUSS-explorers, DBLV architecten is selected to develop a spatial vision for the ILVO research landscape. A call organized by the Team Vlaams Bouwmeester.

ILVO is an institution affiliated with the Flemish government. Its mission is to build up knowledge about the production of food in a socially responsible manner and within planetary boundaries. With more than 700 employees, approximately 200 ha of experimental fields and 90 buildings, ILVO has a rich and unique heritage, embedded in the Rodeland landscape. This vision is the first stepping stone towards a state-of-the-art campus with infrastructure that subscribes to the ambitions of climate neutrality and contributes to the European pursuit of a sustainable living environment.

EXHIBITION ‘ANTWERPEN MORGEN’Project kosmos is part of the exhibition in the city hall of Antwerp called ‘Antwerpen Morgen’. You can visit every day between 9am and 6pm. The exhibition visualises many residential projects, public buildings, parks and squares realised in recent years.

lessines, competition, first prizeDierendonckblancke architecten proudly won the competition for the project ‘Moulin Williame’ for the town of Lessines. The Project contains a concert hall and a café- theatre nestled in an old abandoned mill.

The design team is a joint venture between Dierendonckblancke architecten, Pigeon Ochej Paysage, Bollinger&Grohmann, Daidalos Peutz, HP Engineers and artist Kris Martin.

VAN OVERBEKE, COMPETITION, first prizeDierendonckblancke architecten proudly won the competition for the project ‘Van Overbeke’ for BGHM/SLRB in Ganshoren, Brussels. This apartment building comprises 83 residential units, of which 80% destined for the middle classes and 20% for social housing, a nursery, a sports facility and multifunctional spaces.

The design team is a joint venture between Dierendonckblancke architecten, Macobo-Stabo and Landinzicht.

COMPOSITE PRESENCE, EXHIBITIONThe projects House 12K, Housing project Dambruggestraat and Media Building Brussels will be part of the exhibition Composite Presence at the Biennale Architettura 2021, curated by Bovenbouw Architectuur and produced by Flanders Architecture Institute. The exhibition shows a model landscape representing the friction between city and architecture in Flanders. The scenography shows an urban landscape on a scale of 1/15. 50 recent projects by 45 contemporary Belgian practices contribute to the imaginary landscape.

DE MET, CONSTRUCTION STARTEDThe foundation works of the public square and the adjacent access roads in Kasterlee has started. The project is a winning proposal of an Open Call competition held in 2012, in collaboration with Kris Coremans SS/AXX, including also the construction of a community centre (first phase).

Completion is expected to be delivered by the end of 2021.

competition, first prize ‘Redingensite’We are very happy to announce to have won the competition for the development of the master plan and design of a new university campus at the Redingensite!

This ‘living campus’, located nearby the historical city centre of Leuven, Belgium, will serve the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of KU Leuven. The master plan will integrate the university into the urban structure, acting as a missing link along the river Dijle.

This exhibition collects the 85 models produced by the same number of practices alongside the architectural drawings that prompted them, all of which are held in the UK-based archive of Drawing Matter.

The exhibtion will take place on March 23th till April 14th in Mayfair London.
And will move to CIVA Brussels from September 7th -29th.

The official opening on April 4th will be preceded by a lecture by Alexander Dierendonck in Zaal M of the Bozar complex. Tickets are available via Bozar.

DIERENDONCKBLANCKE: Selected Works 2007-2019Our monographie is out for sale!

The selection of 15 projects collected in this volume illustrates our architectural vision. The assignments represented in our monographie are varied, ranging from housing projects to healthcare institutions, from cultural infrastructure to education.
The book is introduced by an essay by Marc Dubois and Lara Shrijver, and was designed by Luc Derycke including an interview by Lisa De Visscher and Iwan Strauven. It will be published by Verlag Der Buchhandlung Walther König on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Dierendonckblancke - Praxis’, currently on display in BOZAR.
